Coiling of brain aneurysms

A guide for patients and carers

Returning to everyday life

Recovery from coiling is a very individual process.

The main problems people can experience are tiredness, headaches, emotional sensitivity (becoming angry or upset for no particular reason), limb weakness and visual problems. However, please note that the symptoms you have are dependant on the extent of your condition and the area of the brain it has affected. It is important to ‘take things easy’ during your recovery and try not to push yourself too hard. It is common to take at least three months off work. If you smoke, you will be strongly advised to give up.

As coiling is often a treatment for an aneurysm which has burst (sub-arachnoid haemorrhage) you may wish to read our leaflet entitled ‘Recovering from a sub-arachnoid haemorrhage’, this can be downloaded free of charge from our website or a hard copy can be obtained by contacting the Brain and Spine Helpline 0808 808 1000.You can also call the Helpline to talk about any aspect of your recovery and they will try to answer any questions you may have.
