CJD

A guide for GPs

What is CJD?

CJD exists in four forms, and is one example of the human progressive, fatal transmissable spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs).This term describes the spongiform change seen in the brain in these conditions, and their potential transmissibility from affected individuals (see Figure 1).

It is thought that this transmission can only occur by very particular means, such as the consumption of, or injection with, brain tissue, or, in the case of variant CJD, possibly that from other organs such as tonsils or appendix. They are not contagious or transmissible by ordinary contact with affected individuals.
