Complementary and Alternative Medicine

What are alternative and complementary therapies?

Alternative or complementary therapies include a diverse range of practices and products that are not usually part of conventional medicine. They include:

  • Acupuncture
  • Aromatherapy
  • Chiropathy
  • Homeopathy
  • Hypnotherapy
  • Osteopathy

Broadly speaking, complementary therapies are used together with conventional medicine. For example, aromatherapy oils to help people relax before an operation. Alternative therapies are used instead of conventional medical treatments.

Before trying any therapies, you should discuss these with your doctor or a pharmacist. This is because they can interact with some conventional medications or should be avoided for people with certain medical conditions.
